Have you ever felt completely out of your element?

I certainly have. Interior design is an area where I am absolutely incompetent.

No matter how hard I try, I'm just not good at coming up with creative ideas that look cool… so when I need to put together a living space that is visually attractive (and fancier than my college dorm room), it's imperative that I seek professional help.

Fortunately, I just learned about a website called Modsy.

This online service makes it WAY easier, faster, cheaper and more convenient for artistically-challenged people (like me) to find interior designs that actually look good in the rooms where they live every day.

Backstory

modsyEarlier this year, I moved my family to a new house.

With the new pad, we have a few new rooms to use, fill and decorate.

As we’ve already established – I have no idea what I'm doing in this realm, so I decided to contact the people at Modsy to see if they might be able to help.

To give you a quick Before & After – these were the pictures I sent them:

And this was the second design:

As you can see – the designs look VERY real (even though they're entirely computer-generated, most people could easily be fooled).

Their designs offer a very photorealistic portrayal of what your space will look like if you choose to move forward with any/all of their suggestions… and it might even help inspire some new ideas of your own.

Where to Buy?

Now, I'm not entirely sure how Modsy makes money (other than their relatively cheap design packages), but it would only make sense if they got some kind of kickback when clients order furniture, art, and accessories through their website, from the third parties they recommend.

Modsy works with a TON of different companies to offer suggestions on different pieces of furniture and art for the layout of your space. Most of them are recognizable names, like Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, West Elm and Wayfair, just to name a few.

In the pricing research I did, I looked up every suggested piece directly from each third party retailer. As I was cross-checking their prices, I didn't find things to be any cheaper by going directly to the source to buy these items – so I definitely wouldn't be paying more by purchasing through the Modsy website. They're essentially giving me a more direct way to buy the items they suggest for my room (if I decide to buy them at all).

It's also worth noting – I don't NEED to buy precisely what my Modsy designer suggests. In my opinion, the real value behind this service is in the idea generation.

For instance, if you find something at IKEA (or even Walmart, for that matter) that you like more and costs half the price, there's nothing saying you can't opt for that instead… it will just require you to drive out, buy it and drive it back home (rather than having it shipped directly to your address).

Smart Uses for Modsy

I think a service like Modsy is best suited for someone in my exact situation.

If you need help coming up with ideas for designing your living space (either because you aren't great at doing it yourself, or you don't have time), this is a great way to fill that need without breaking the bank.

Give Modsy a Shot!

Another possible scenario where Modsy can help with is in coming up with home staging ideas.

Whether you're trying to sell a house/condo/apartment as a fully furnished unit (which could make it sell much faster, and for more money) or you're going to rent out your house (or even a spare bedroom) through a site like Airbnb – having a fully furnished unit that looks good is pretty much a requirement these days… and Modsy is a GREAT way to put together something everyone will love.

Another side benefit of ordering your items directly through Modsy is that you won't need to go to the store and/or bring the furniture home in your own car – which can save you a ton of time and energy. By ordering online, everything will be delivered right to your doorstep.

It's also worth noting if you're on a tight budget and you need to keep your total expense beneath a certain dollar amount, this can be very challenging when you don't know where to look for items that are both inexpensive and look good together.

The designers at Modsy have access to a seemingly infinite number of items at varying price ranges, and they know how to use their network to piece together items that look good at any price range. If you're struggling to create a room with the right look, within a budget you can afford, Modsy could be a very worthwhile cost that can help bridge this gap.
